Love Was Not an Option Page 13

They cooked a couple of steaks for each of them, seared on the outside, rare on the interior.

Nick had just finished his first one when Greg said, out of the blue, “I never asked this. You’re half vampire. Don’t you need human blood, too, sometimes?”

“I do.” Nick replied. “Not as often as I would if I were a full vampire. I keep a small supply in a refrigerator hidden in the basement.”

“Okay. I just wondered. At least you don’t go hunting down donors.”

Nick snorted. “No vampire does these days unless they’ve gone rogue, or they’re Fledglings and starving and think they have no other recourse.”

  “What happens if that happens?”

“The rogues are quickly dealt with, either by other vampires, or by one of us who work with Kasper. The Fledglings? Hopefully their Sires take them in hand as soon as they find out. If not, another vampire will take them under their wing and teach them correctly.”

“Good.” He chuckled suddenly. “I think I’ve finally run out of questions about anything involving you, me, and other supernaturals.”

Nick heaved a mock sigh of relief. “Finally.”

Greg flipped him off, and they finished eating. They decided to take it easy for the rest of the day, going to a movie before returning home to eat a late, light supper, and head to bed.

Nick had the feeling there would be more questions, and when there were he’d answer them honestly. That was part and parcel of their relationship now—complete honesty in everything.

The days turned to weeks, the weeks to months, and as they did, Nick decided there was one thing more he had to do to make their life complete.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he said as he opened the regular Monday morning staff meeting early in May. “If I may have your attention.” His employees looked at him in question. “As you know, there is a very special man in my life.” He smiled at Greg. Taking a small box from his jacket pocket, he knelt in front of him. “It would be the greatest joy of my life if you would do me the honor of marrying me.”

There were collective gasps, the loudest one from Greg. “I will. I can’t think of anything that would make me happier than to be your husband.”

Cheers rang out when they kissed and Nick slipped the ring onto Greg’s finger.

Nick gave everyone time to congratulate them before saying, “Now, about the Fulsome account. Mark…”

  ABOUT EDWARD KENDRICK

Born and bred in Cleveland, I earned a degree in technical theater, later switched to costuming, and headed to NYC. Finally seeing the futility of trying to become rich and famous in the Big Apple, I joined VISTA—Volunteers in Service to America—ending up in Chicago for three years. Then it was on to Denver where I put down roots and worked as a costume designer until I retired in 2007.

I began writing a few years ago after joining an online fanfic group. Two friends and I then started a group for writers, where they could post any story they wished no matter the genre or content. Since then, for the last five years, I’ve been writing for publication—my first book came out in February of 2011. Most, but not all, of my work is M/M, either mildly erotic or purely ‘romantic.’ More often than not it involves a mystery or action/adventure, and is sometimes paranormal to boot.
